Amentum Power Plant Electrician in Antarctica

Position Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Complies with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements, goals, policies and procedures. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.

  • Performs preventive maintenance and repair on all switchgear control circuits, generators, contactors and relays in accordance with procedures and manufacturers’ recommendations.

  • Tests and repairs all safety circuits in generator and control units.

  • Inspects electrical power generation systems to ensure that no faults exist.

  • Monitors operation of all power generation electrical components to ensure proper operation.

  • Monitors loading; operates power generation equipment in an efficient and economical manner.

  • Completes maintenance records and maintains operating logbooks as required; documents all maintenance performed.  

  • Coordinates with the Utilities Supervisor or their on-ice representative to order repair and/or spare parts, maintenance parts, assemblies, tools and consumables.

  • Advises the Utilities Supervisor or their on-ice representative the status of power production stock, equipment and systems.

  • Maintains control of Power Plant Electrician's tools and manuals.

  • Maintains inventory accuracy at 98% or better.

  • Trains Power Plant Operators and Mechanics on Power Plant operation and equipment as directed.

  • Ability to cover Power Plant Operator shift / rounds as required.

  • Supports the achievement of metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly, affected by this position’s work activities.  

  • Works to achieve goals and contractual commitments.

  • Troubleshoots and repairs electrical problems.

  • Willingness to work a rotating shift: day, swing or night shift.

  • Responds to power outages and equipment failures as required.

  • Evaluates job hazards and communicates information to staff verbally and in writing through various venues, including weekly and/or daily crew meetings.

  • Interprets project tasking utilizing design drawings, specifications and diagrams.

  • Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with their superiors and peers as needed to relay information they need in order to be successful in their jobs. This includes, but is not limited to, staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, projects, Quality Standard Procedures, and safety practices.

  • May be required to work outside on various jobsites in extreme cold weather and environmentally challenging conditions.

  • Interacts with other partner companies, the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person. Is kind, courteous, cooperative and professional at all times.

  • Participate in dormitory chores while deployed to Antarctica.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • A current Journeyman Electrician license, a current Master Electrician license, or equivalent Union membership in good standing. A Journeyman license requiring less than 8,000 hours or of the Residential type shall not be considered.

  • Minimum four years (8,000 Hours) documented experience in all phases of electrical work, with at least 2 of those years being in power distribution wiring, directly related power plant/electrical switchgear and control panel maintenance and repair.  

Expected Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to read design drawings and wiring diagrams is required.  

  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to handle multiple tasks at once is required.  

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, hazards, and safety precautions related to diesel engines and diesel engine driven electric generators is required.

  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude and to work efficiently in a stressful environment is required.

  • Working comprehension of electrical distribution, control panels and medium voltage switchgear.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience with remote Polar Logistics operations is preferred.

  • Experience working with AC and DC voltages from 12 up to 4160 is preferred.  

  • Mechanical, construction, or other industrial experience is preferred.

Physical and/or Other Requirements :

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods

  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica

  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer

  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.

  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
