Sunrun Engineering Manager, Energy Simulation and Optimization in Santa Fe, New Mexico

Everything we do at Sunrun is driven by a determination to transform the way we power our lives. We know that starts at the individual employee level. We strive to foster an environment you can thrive in through our commitment to diversity, inclusion and belonging.

Overview

Sunrun’s Core Services organization is seeking a Software Engineering Manager to lead our Energy Simulation and Optimization team. Sunrun designs and deploys residential solar-powered energy solutions at a massive scale and the complexities of designing and delivering these solutions to unique homes and properties are extremely challenging. We’re really good at this, and now we need you to help us get better.

Some questions you’ll help us answer are: How do we create software that can support a wide range of customers, from single-family homeowners to large multi-family dwellings and entire new construction communities? How do we accurately model energy flows from the roof to the battery, the home, the vehicle, and the grid? How do we optimize power system design for our customers in a way that can keep pace with our rapidly changing industry? And how do we best apply the data we have from Sunrun’s massive, multi-gigawatt fleet of residential solar installations to improve how residential energy systems are designed and managed?

We support Sunrun in being a transparent and trustworthy partner to our customers by providing industry leading solar design solutions with accurate power predictions. Every solar system at Sunrun goes through our software and every solar contract at Sunrun includes guarantees based on our simulations – we will be betting the company on the success of the software you help develop.

About you:

You’re an end-to-end owner and are adept at guiding your team to create simple systems that solve complex problems. You love to create software that models the real world and have experience working in 3D rendering, simulation, optimization, or similar computationally-intensive fields. You understand the value of preserving customer trust and you sweat the details to make sure we deliver on customer expectations. You thrive in the unfamiliar and enjoy the challenge of a difficult problem over the ease of a simple one. You appreciate that most problems are not fundamentally new and seek tried and true solutions where possible, saving your team’s creative energy for where it’s most needed. You think beyond individual features and consider the system as a whole, especially in terms of how to improve its flexibility for the future. You love to teach as much as you love to learn and you always remember that there’s another human being on the other end of every conversation, discussion, or disagreement.

Worried about making the change to work in solar power? Don’t be! We’re looking for strong, motivated, people-oriented engineering leaders who are excited to deliver products that fight climate change; we’re happy to teach you everything you need to (or want to) know about the renewables industry.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of back-end software and QA engineers in the development of the software systems that create accurate and reliable residential solar designs

  • Collaborate with product management and your commercial and technical stakeholders to create software products that are not just viable, but lovable.

  • Define the short and long term strategy for your team, including how your software and people will need to grow and change to meet emerging business needs and industry trends.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent work experience

  • 8+ years of experience in software development, including 3+ years of experience directly managing a team of software engineers
