Summary This announcement uses the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service. Responsibilities Perform the full range of overhaul and repair work on heavy duty mobile equipment and vehicles powered by internal combustion engines The mechanic is responsible for the full range of overhaul and repair work which may involve such functions as; determining or diagnosing the courses of operating problems and locating defective or worn parts and equipment Install needed parts or assemblies such as pistons, gears, cylinders, etc. and fittings to appropriate tolerances or other specifications; Overhaul and/or rebuild or implement other major repairs to systems and controls, suspension and braking systems, and electrical systems Align and adjust repaired parts or systems to insure the proper operation of the vehicle. Determine the appropriate repair procedure to be used Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Your resume must demonstrate that you have the ability to perform the common tasks such as repairing or rebuilding systems such as diesel, gasoline, and other types of internal combustion engines; and/or automatic and non-automatic transmissions; and/or heavy duty drive line systems; and/or hydraulic utility systems and controls. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Job Elements: The skills, knowledge, abilities, and personal characteristics listed below are important to succeed in the job: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (Screen-out Element) Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (Includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Trouble shooting Physical Efforts: Must work frequently in tiring or otherwise uncomfortable positions for extended periods. Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Must work both top of and underneath vehicles. May perform strenuous work involved in lifting and carrying items of considerable heavy weight (30-50 lbs.). Heavier items may also be lifted with the assistance of other workers and mechanical devices such as jacks or hoists. Working Conditions: Required to work both indoors and outdoors often on concrete floors or on the ground. Indoors, may be exposed to drafts as well as other factors such as exhaust fumes, heat, dirt, and grease. When working outdoors, may at times be exposed to bad weather as well as fumes, dirt, and grease. Exposed to possibility of cuts, burns, bruises, and electric shock.
