Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive care utilizing the Indian Health Service supplied facilities; equipment and support services

  • Responde to rapidly changing and unexpected needs for temporary coverage within a service unit.

  • Advise the Clinical Director, Dental Supervisor, or designated representative of any problem encountered, in connection with meeting the patient care needs.

  • Participate in quality assurance activities that ensure quality patient care as well as efficient use of hospital resources. These activities may include, but not limited to, chart review and discussion with the Clinical Director or designee.

  • Develop a working understanding of the Joint Commission standards, the Centers for Disease Control guidelines and Association of Infection Control guidelines.

  • The number of patients to be seen shall be no less than an estimated 16 per eight (8) hour work day.

  • Examine, diagnose, and develop treatment plans and recommendations for patients seen.

  • Recommend and refer patients to other Indian Health Service providers and Purchased Referred Care vendors within appropriate IHS guidelines.

  • Electronically document services utilizing the appropriate electronic medical record system for patient encounters; complete all required administrative paperwork within 24- hours of patient visit to include electronic consults, co-signatures, completion of chart or Risk Management Reviews, unusual occurrences and peer review, as required.

  • Provide consultation to the Hospital Emergency Department heath care providers on an as needed basis.

  • Provide dental services as needed, make preliminary diagnoses direct, prescribe or provide treatment or arrange for specialized dental care or patient referral as required, following Indian Health Services guidelines for referrals.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a current DDS or DMD license.

  • Must be residency trained in their specialty.

  • Must be Medical Board Certified in their specialty.

  • Dentist shall apply and be accepted as clinic/hospital associate member of on-site Medical Staff.

  • Shall have a current DEA license.

  • Rubella immunity must be documented either by serologic test or proof of immunization

  • A yearly PPD is required for all persons who have had no previous positive tuberculin skin test

  • A series of three (3) Hepatitis B immunizations or serologic proof of past infection is required

  • A yearly influenza vaccination

  • COVID-19 vaccination and necessary boosters to maintain vaccinated status

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • May be required to work after hours and weekend clinic to meet the needs of the communities we serve.

  • Shall maintain standards of personal hygiene and grooming such that his/her image as a physician is compatible with the expectations of the on-site supervisor.

  • Shall be required to develop familiarity and abide by current policies, procedures, by-laws, and regulation of the on-site clinical and medical staff.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Shall possess sufficient initiative, interpersonal relationship skills and social sensitivity such that he/she can relate constructively to patients of the Native American/Alaska Native communities.
