Description

The City of Norfolk Department of Parks & Recreation is seeking a Recreational Specialist focused on the Visual Arts. This position will develop, organize, and teach fine art classes in at least two different mediums. The Recreation Specialist will interact with children, adults and seniors while participating in activities, and develop and implement fee-based fine arts class structure to contribute to the cultural growth of individuals through fine arts programming

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Assists in planning, implementing, and evaluating visual art programs and daily activities for youth, teens, adults, and seniors.

  • Develop, organize, and teach fine art classes in at least two different mediums.

  • Assist with developing and implementing fee-based, fine arts class structure to contribute to the cultural growth of individuals through visual arts programming.

  • Safely operate equipment such as but not limited to; pottery kiln, pottery wheels, enameling kiln, glass kiln, sand blaster and printmaking press.

  • Assists with the management of daily operations of the facility by scheduling and monitoring volunteers and employees, compiling figures and preparing reports, providing lesson plans, program planning, authorizing permits and collecting fees.

  • Market programs by creating flyers/announcements to the community, submitting press releases, and serving on committees for the planning and marketing of events.

  • Interacts with and develops a positive relationship with the public by responding to inquiries, contributing to the growth and development of students and volunteers.

  • Performs related duties by carrying out administrative responsibilities, transporting patrons, submit and write initiatives, provide input on budgetary spending and revenue generation

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge of specific vocational, technical nature which may be obtained with a six months/ one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalent. At least college level.

Have at least a year experience in art or Art Education

Additional Information & Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License.

  • CPR/First Aid Certification within six months of employment.

Work Location: Titustown Visual Arts Center, 7545 Diven St, Norfolk, VA 23505

Work Hours: Monday to Sunday; 6:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.; not to exceed 40 hours per week; flexible hours will apply including weekends, holidays, and special events.

Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.

  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

  • Retirement

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
