Roles and Responsibilities: Machinist

  • The Machinist / Mechanic will perform duties consisting of troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing & installing mechanical components and sub-components of cranes, conveyors, automated equipment, HVAC systems, turntables, transfer tables, car wash machines, diesel locomotives, engines, and other heavy equipment / machines.

  • Cleaning of tools, equipment and parts with wire brushes, torches and cleaning solvents.

  • Inspect various equipment types for structural damage, integrity and wear according to Federal Railroad Administration, Association of American Railroads, NJ Transit Rail Operations policies/procedures.

  • Grinding, boring, cutting, bending, sizing, shaping, slotting, milling, planning, sanding, fabricating, and filling of various machine and engine parts.

  • Will read and interpret schematics, blueprints, shop drawings, technical manuals and other written documentation in the completion of assigned tasks.

  • Inspect various engine fluids for viscosity and proper level.

  • Will be required to become qualified to troubleshoot, repair and test all air brake equipment and its sub-components in accordance with the Association of American Railroads, NJ Transit Rail Operations and Federal Railroad codes.

  • Must be familiar with basic machine shop mathematics, indexing, and operation of various shop machinery.

  • Machinist may be required to work on nights, weekends and holiday shifts.

  • Work sites may be located throughout the NJ Transit System.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.

  • Trade school training and professional licenses preferred.

  • Mechanic background/experience highly desired.

Work Location:

  • Various – Machinist / Mechanic positions are located throughout the state of New Jersey, certain locations in NY (Penn Station, Spring Valley, and Port Jervis), or in Morrisville, PA so you must be willing and able to travel to any of these locations as required.

  • This is a Unionized position.
