Welder (AN)

The Welder will be based at one of four PAE sites in Iraq and serve the Operations and Maintenance Support Services (OMSS) contract in support of the U.S. Department of State. This position will be responsible for all facility welding and related fabrication projects and will report to the O&M Manager. The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all inclusive.


 Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

 Comply with all Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. Provide information and materials to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.

 Maintain welds on various items using a variety of welding processes, such as arc, tungsten inert gas, metallic inert gas, and brazing.

 Repair metal surfaces (doors, drain covers, fences, motorized gates, grates, railing, furniture, tools, parts, etc) for the purpose of ensuring safe and efficient use of items.

 Install various welded items for the purpose of completing projects safely and within established time frames.

 Maintain shop, equipment, tools, vehicles, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of required items.

 Coordinate with supervisor and other trades personnel for the purpose of completing project/work orders efficiently.

 Request welding equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items.

 Assist other trade personnel as required.

 Respond to emergency situations as needed and /or assigned for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

 Transport various items to job site.

 Work under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods.

 Perform inspections and prepare written inspection reports.

 Maintain effective, timely and respectful communication and interaction with other employees, manager, and supports other organizations.

 Perform other administrative tasks when directed, including ordering material, inventorying, scheduling work, and performing other administrative report preparation.

 Responsible for facility custodianship of work area and management of tools, equipment, and spare parts for the welding/fabrication operation.

 Take initiative to analyze a situation and to make frequent technical decisions based on specifications, safety, and schedule.

 Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.


o Minimum Acceptable Experience Level:

o Five (5) years’ metal fabrication and welding experience.

o Experience in reading and interpreting architectural and engineering (A&E) design drawings.

o Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

o Knowledge of applicable US Codes and acceptable trade practices.

o Knowledge and experience regarding occupational hazards of the welding trade, related safety precautions and the considerable skill required for welding and the use of welding equipment.

o Ability to operate equipment used in welding and metal fabrication

o Ability to plan projects; prepare and maintain accurate records; and adhere to safety practices.

o Ability to read and calculate dimensions as required to fabricate all welding position layouts.

o Good organizational and time management skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment and make independent decisions.

o Ability to work in a fast-paced environment that requires handling multiple tasks at a given time and rapidly adapting to changing priorities and schedules.

o Cross-cultural sensitivity with an international perspective.

o Computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Word and Excel.

o Ability to become an active and functioning member of a team.

o Ability to be innovative and be an agent for change.

o Expert communication skills to facilitate and disseminate information.

o Education : A high school diploma or GED is required. A certification by the American Welding Society (AWS), or American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is strongly preferred.

o Licenses and Certifications :

o Valid drivers’ license from Home of Record.

o Certification by the American Welding Society (AWS), or American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is strongly preferred.

o Security Vetting : Already possess a US Government issued security clearance or be able to obtain a favorable US Government clearance prior to being hired is required for the position. Must maintain eligibility at the required certification or clearance level for the duration of the contract.

o Language Skills : Satisfactory English proficiency to meet job requirements and to adhere and comply with safety, health, and security measures.

o Citizenship : US Citizenship is required.

o Medical: Successfully complete and pass the medical and dental examinations as required by PAE and our customer for deployment to Iraq. Must maintain physical and dental requirements for duration of deployment.


 Previous welding experience in an OCONUS environment with a multi-national workforce is desirable.

 Knowledge and experience regarding occupational hazards of the welding trade, related safety precautions and the considerable skill required for welding and the use of welding equipment.

 Knowledge in the discipline of operations and maintenance (O&M) projects in a desert environment preferred.

 Experience working with PAE.

 Experience working with SOW, shop drawings and blueprints.


This position may be located in a war zone, in an environment with harsh and dangerous working and living conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may regularly be exposed to extreme and austere desert-like environment. Temperatures can reach 120-130 degrees Fahrenheit/50-55 degrees Celsius during the summer months. Employees must be willing and able to perform regular job requirements in this austere, extreme environment, as well as willing and able to deploy to Iraq for extended periods. Work schedules are a minimum of 6 days per week and 10 hours per day, while some jobs have higher daily and weekly minimums. Employees must be willing and able to perform physical activities including, but not limited to, heavy lifting and moving of items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum; climbing in and out of equipment; crawling; and working outdoors. This includes being able to lift and carry 40 pounds of personal protective equipment for extended periods of time and being capable of running and ‘duck & cover’ during emergencies without putting oneself or others at risk.
