Mac Ops Supervisor

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Supervises staff of Communications Operators .

  • Responsible for oversight of the McMurdo Operations Center, providing operational communications coordination for field personnel, communications with non-Government activities and other national stations.

  • Provide oversight of local vehicle check-outs and monitoring for off-site travel.

  • Ensures that departmental logs are accurate and that the information is available as requested.

  • Provides notification to appropriate staff as required in event of emergency calls, and requests for assistance from field personnel.

  • Disseminates ASC policies regarding acceptable usage for communications assets on site.

  • Responsible for monitoring status of communications links, including Iridium capabilities, HF communications and VHF communications.

  • Responsible for training programs for Communications Operators, documentation review and SOP revisions.

  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Interacts with the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials in a professional and tactful manner.

  • Coordinates international communications and relays information to appropriate agencies. Deals with sensitive information in a confidential manner.

  • Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with subordinates as needed to relay information they need in order to be successful in their jobs. This includes but is not limited to staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, and safety practices.

  • Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy.

  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Performs other duties as required.


  • Bachelor degree required. Degree in Communications or Computer Science is preferred. Relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.

  • Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 200 certifications required for offer consideration (training offered online through FEMA).

  • Minimum four years diversified experience in radio operations and communications technology is required.

  • Computer experience required.

  • At least one year of previous supervisory experience is required.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

  • US citizenship or US Permanent Resident Status is required.
