Supports the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) and the National Science Foundation’s United States Antarctic Program. ASC Lineman will perform maintenance or construction work, or any combination thereof, under the supervision of the Lineman Foreman. Tasking will be based on an individual’s experience and departmental labor needs.

GENERAL DUTIES (not all-inclusive):

  • Participates in safe workplace program, ensuring safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Accomplishes maintenance and construction work under the supervision of the Lineman Foreman.

  • Performs overhead electrical line installation and maintenance, working with voltages up to 4160 volts utilizing design drawings, specifications, and wiring diagrams, in accordance with applicable codes.

  • Performs rough wiring, power distribution wiring, and wiring of electrical equipment, fixtures, installation and maintenance of electrical power distribution systems in accordance with applicable codes.

  • Troubleshoots and repairs existing electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures.

  • Performs scheduled Preventative Maintenance of electrical systems and equipment.

  • Responds to afterhours emergency calls for repairs and service.

  • Advises the Lineman Foreman on job progress and material/labor requirements.

  • Accomplishes various projects utilizing design drawings, specifications, and wiring diagrams.

  • Completes accurate and thorough documentation of work performed and processes involved.

  • Works outside in extreme cold weather and environmentally challenging conditions.

  • Adheres to ASC Electrical Safety Program and strives to promote electrical safety throughout the United States Antarctic Program.

  • Identifies unsafe conditions and/or NEC violations and reports them to the Lineman Foreman.

  • Works with other departments to plan and complete tasking.

  • Uses computer based labor, material and maintenance tracking applications.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.


  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Current Journeyman Lineman license, jurisdictions equivalent, or proof of holding a Journeyman Lineman Union card is required.

  • Minimum four years of experience in all phases of the lineman trade including rough wiring, power distribution wiring and installation and maintenance of power distribution systems, installation of conduit and wiring of electrical equipment is required.

  • Experience working with voltages of 4160 is required.

  • Understanding of National Electrical Code Grounding and Bonding requirements.

  • The ability to read design drawings and wiring diagrams is preferred.

  • Experience working in a commercial or industrial environment is preferred.

  • U.S./State Vehicle Operators License is required and CDL is preferred.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others and get along well with co-workers, grantees and other community members.

  • US citizenship or Permanent US Resident Status required.
