GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):
Directs the daily operation of the McMurdo area fuels distribution system to include the bulk fuel tank farms, related piping and hose systems, fixed wing aircraft, helicopter and equipment refueling stations, fuel testing, and fuel requirements for science projects, South Pole Station and field camps.
Supervises and provides work direction for the Fuels Operators and Lead Fuels Operators..
Creates daily and seasonal schedules for Fuels Department personnel.
Allocates work assignments based on observed and assessed competencies of Fuels Operators and Lead Fuels Operators.
Responsible for providing end of season work performance evaluations for Fuels Operators and Lead Fuels Operators.
Ensures Fuels and Lead Fuels Operators complete training modules for Fuels tasking and equipment use.
Writes/revises/edits Fuels Department documents, including Standard Operating Procedures, Internal Work Instruction Documents, and Job Hazard Assessments.
Works outside on various job sites in extreme cold weather conditions as required.
Works in the Fuels Office assisting with radio communications, work direction and interdepartmental communications so as to complete daily tasking. Maintains workplace program and ensures safety is the highest priority in the work place.
Performs other duties as required.
High school graduate or GED is required. College degree is preferred.
Valid driver license required.
Minimum of three years fuels or related experience is required plus one year experience in a foreman or supervisory position.
Previous experience with remote Polar Logistics operations is preferred.
Must be able to pass a Pulmonary Function Test and wear a respirator.
Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.
