Los Alamos National Laboratory Senior Structural Engineer (Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Within this job, successful candidates will have to opportunity to support the Laboratory's mission by renovating rooms, modifying buildings and structural members, and developing new structures within and around the plutonium facility. Often within this role, engineers will be installing equipment on housekeeping pads or skids with the use of post-installed anchors. Structural engineers working for the plutonium facility will utilize their structural engineering background to support crane girders and crane support structures, canopies, equipment support stands, piping/conduit supports, wall/floor/ceiling penetrations, and concrete slabs. Incumbent will work alongside multi-disciplinary engineering team settings to complete collaborative full-system solutions through mentoring, calculations, and leadership.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expert knowledge of new and existing non-reactor facility structural engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of computer-aided engineering tools to solve operations-based engineering problems.

  • Structural analysis experience in any of the following: SAP 2000, GT STRUDL, RISA, STAAD, or equal.

  • Advanced knowledge of engineering work, planning, construction, and control methods.

  • Advanced knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies. Extensive knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.

  • Advanced knowledge of industry, regulatory, or national, and Department of Energy codes and standards including IBC, AISC 360, ACI 318, ASCE 7, and DOE-STD 1020.

  • Advanced knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.

  • Advance knowledge of project and process engineering practices.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to structural design implementation.

  • Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures.

  • Professional Engineering certification.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Where You Will Work

Successful candidates will be working within the Plutonium Facilities Engineering (PFE) Division. The PFE Division of LANL develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. The Structural Engineer position is assigned to the PFE Division responsible for Conduct of Engineering (CoE) program implementation at Technical Area 55.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
