Los Alamos National Laboratory ESH&Q Professional 3 - Explosives Safety in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The ESH Professional 3 will support the explosives safety team by helping with a variety of tasks and activities to support the implementation of the Explosive Safety Program. This position will be involved in operations and activities related to high explosives (HE), pyrotechnics, propellants, energetic HE precursors, and assemblies containing these materials on Laboratory property, the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), and off-site locations where LANL provides the work authorization and has primary safety responsibility.

This role will work directly with the LANL Explosives Safety AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction), Explosives Safety Program lead, and Chief Explosives Safety Officer while directly supporting the internal organizations who specialize in the development and testing of explosives.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience with implementing the core principals of project management to ensure that complex, on-going, long-term objectives are met.

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience assessing the day-to-day operations of an organization for compliance with local, state, federal and/or institutional regulations, and policies.

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience providing compliance related guidance to workers, management, and other stakeholders for the creation of corrective actions, plans, procedures and policies.

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience leading hazard analyses to ensure the work control documents cover all hazards and controls for a given operation.

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience assessing operations to ensure that work control documents and related hazard analyses are adequate and appropriate for a given task.

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience conducting assessments, audits, inspections and/or management observations to identify compliance/ safety issues.

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience implementing federal, state, local and institutional regulations.

  • Active Q clearance, or ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable. Master's degree preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Successfully demonstrated experience in developing and nurturing effective internal and/or external customer relationships in support of explosive safety.

  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.

  • Direct experience with high explosives machining and fabrication.

  • Direct experience in high explosive contamination determination, waste collection and disposal.

  • Experience working with stakeholders to create training on highly technical materials that can be provided to new employees at an appropriate level of understanding.

  • Experience in developing explosive training materials.

Work Environment:

Work Schedule: Preferred is 9/80; 9 hours M-TH, 8 hours F with every other F off. Ability to work off shift or swing shift may be required.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
