Senior Paralegal I, EUME - Job Description

Marriott Vacations Worldwide Corporation (“MVWC”)

Department: Law

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Paralegal is part of MVWC’s EUME Law Department team, based in London, reporting to Regional Counsel EUME.

The EUME team’s primary functions are to provide legal support relating to (1) the management of MVWC’s five resorts in Europe; and (2) the sale of MVWC’s vacation ownership products from sales centers in Europe and the Middle East.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate previous experience of working independently on multiple legal matters, preferably in various jurisdictions, under supervision of a solicitor (or equivalent in another jurisdiction).

The role requires written and spoken fluency in at least Spanish, with Italian or French in addition to Spanish preferred.

The role may require some supervision of other paralegals.

CORE WORK ACTIVITIES

Legal Skills and Responsibilities

  • Draft and negotiate high-value contracts with third party vendors for various business areas including sales & marketing, resort operations and IT.

  • Understand how to manage risk in contracts including analysis of insurance levels and indemnity wording.

  • Comprehend and utilize complex legal terminology and perform legal research (with the assistance of outside counsel where necessary) to identify issues and prepare suitable advice for internal clients.

  • Review and analyze complex legal documents and correspondence with thoroughness and accuracy and summarize for business clients’ use.

  • Instruct outside counsel where relevant and approved by Regional Counsel.

  • Summarize outside counsel advice for internal client review.

  • Provide drafts to Regional Counsel of legal advice to clients.

  • Review sales and marketing collateral to ensure legal compliance with applicable laws.

  • Draft powers of attorney for sales teams.

  • Keep up to date with regulatory issues relating to various business areas.

  • Apply legal skills and knowledge across multiple European jurisdictions.

Business Knowledge

  • Understand MVWC’s business areas in order to assess legal/regulatory impacts on those areas and in order to provide appropriate legal advice.

  • Understand the Law Department’s business strategies and his/her role in achieving these.

  • Identify resources to get the job done including external counsel in multiple European and Middle Eastern jurisdictions.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of all MVW product lines.

  • Demonstrate ability to work independently on substantive tasks and work as part of a team.

  • Accumulate/compile data and information and assimilate it using own thought process (as opposed to transcribing someone else’s thoughts or notes).

  • Follow through on inquiries, requests and complaints – goes the extra mile and willing to work extra time to resolve issues when necessary.

  • Overcome obstacles to accomplish challenging objectives and solve problems as necessary.

  • Interact and developer relationships with outside entities such as government offices, regulatory agencies, translation services providers and law firms.

  • Utilize, create, or establish procedures to be able to organize, coordinate and retrieve documents.

  • Accumulate specific and detailed knowledge and understanding of moderately complex issues in various legal practice areas.

  • Understand specific legal aspects of assigned work and how it relates to overall project.

CRITICAL COMPETENCIES

  • Excellent employment record and references with minimum of 2 years relevant legal work experience, preferably in an international company and ideally in the tourism/leisure or consumer sector.

  • Law degree required (not necessarily in English law) and further legal education (for example, Legal Practice Course in England or equivalent overseas) preferred.

  • English and Spanish spoken and written fluency required, Italian or French in addition to Spanish preferred.
