DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Special Education Advisor with the Department of Education, you will have the fulfilling responsibility to assist with enhancing the special education programs within our school systems.  You will investigate and follow-up on complaints filed against school districts as required by federal regulations and corresponding court orders.  Assertive communication skills are necessary, as you will be negotiating, approving, and verifying the implementation of corrective action plans resulting from any findings of non-compliance.

You will also review and recommend approvals or denials of school district and intermediate unit special education plans and plan revisions in addition to providing guidance and assistance in the interpretation of federal and state laws, regulations, and standards.

Within this role, it is essential to maintain current information on federal statutes, regulations, case laws, Commonwealth laws, standards, and policies that pertain to the education of students with disabilities.  You will participate in public meetings organized for the improvement of programs and services and work in collaboration with other divisions, bureaus, departments, and agencies as required to respond to concerns regarding special education services. Work Schedule and Additional Information: Full-time employment Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with 60-minute lunch. This position requires travel. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: Five years of professional experience in special education including two years as an administrator of a special education program; or An equivalent combination of experience and training, which includes two years as an administrator of a special education program.
