Day Camp Counselor – Empowering Young Minds, One Adventure at a Time! 

Status: Non-Exempt, Part-Time , Seasonal (Summer)   

Reports to: Director of Programs 

Salary: $16.56 - $17.61 per hour  

Location: Oceanside, CA  

This role is based in Southern California, specifically in Oceanside, CA (North San Diego County). It is located inside a miliary base installation. Base access is provided to civilian employees.

Welcome to the adventure of a lifetime with Camp Hero! We're on the lookout for enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Camp Counselors.  

Who you are: 

If you're passionate about working with elementary school age children and creating unforgettable experiences, then this is the perfect opportunity for you. You will be implementing our dynamic social and educational program, where you'll get to develop exciting lesson plans, coordinate engaging activities, and foster a positive environment that promotes learning and fun. You will embark on a summer full of adventure, growth, and making a difference in the lives of military children. 

What will you do: 

  • Get creative! You'll be responsible for bringing our awesome social and educational program to life. That means whipping up fun lesson plans, coordinating activities, games, songs, and more, all tied to our weekly themes and packed with YMCA's values of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty. 

  • Connect with parents! Keep the lines of communication open and effective, ensuring everyone's in the loop and having a blast. 

  • Superpowers required! With your strong interpersonal skills, you'll tackle any childcare situation with a smile, whether it's a scraped knee or a squabble over who gets to be the hero in the game. 

  • Keep it tidy! Maintaining a safe, organized, and clean space for our campers to explore and learn is key. 

  • You'll also write up reports and lesson plans and be the ultimate multitasker as you manage various tasks and priorities. 

What experience and skills you will need to be successful:   

  • Possess at least a high school diploma or GED, coupled with a minimum of 1 year in supervised programmatic childcare. 

  • Must be at least 18 years old  

  • A high school graduate or hold a degree in fields such as child development or related field preferred; equivalent experience may be substituted.   

  • Successfully pass background checks and drug testing to maintain the safety of our hero headquarters. 

  • Meet current health and sanitation requirements, along with passing random drug testing, criminal background checks, and employment reference background checks.
