This Research Analyst position is responsible for coordinating, collecting, processing and analyzing roadway data across the state transportation system. In this position, the incumbent will be part of a team responsible for operating, maintaining, and calibrating the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD), Pavement Friction Test (PFT), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Profiler/Video Van equipment. The equipment is used to complete tests on the state highway system. This testing provides the Idaho Transportation Department with information for project planning, research and safety.

Notice: This is a non-benefited temporary position, working 40 hours per week for up to 5 months. This position requires 50-75% travel, including weekday overnight stays.

Example of Duties:

  • Uses highway plans and specifications, GIS maps and aerial photographs for highway maintenance or engineering activities;

  • Performs materials testing by driving and operating the FWD, PFT, GPR and Profiler Van for the Department, collecting data for the state highway system, and collecting data for special requests annually;

  • Computes, checks, and verifies computer data;

  • May direct the work of others assigned to assist with testing operations;

  • Prepares maps, reports and schedules showing collection routes with mile posting;

  • Prepares reports or makes presentations to ITD employees, officials and others as requested;

  • Performs calibration, maintenance checks and minor repairs on equipment.

  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical and/or, mechanical issues related to vehicle operation.

This position requires:

  • Irregular shifts, overtime, and some weekends.

  • 50% - 75% travel requiring weekday overnight stays;

  • Physically demanding tasks such as carrying heavy objects;

  • Working in all types of weather conditions, under hazardous conditions, on congested highways, around operating equipment and in a noisy environment;

  • Sitting and riding in a vehicle for extended periods of time while accurately monitoring multiple computer screens.

Minimum Requirement:

  • Valid Driving License

Good knowledge of:

  • Research methods; principles of statistics; sampling theory and probability theory.

Experience:

  • Writing analytical (research) reports or materials; compiling and analyzing statistical data and drawing conclusions;

  • Using statistical software or spreadsheet software to perform statistical analysis;

  • Interpreting and communicating (orally and in writing) statistical material into information usable by a target audience.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with data collection, database management, data quality control and data transfer.

  • Proficiency using laptop computers and standard Microsoft Office software applications.

  • Vocational background (ex. welding/fabrication, electronics, hydraulics, automotive repair, heavy equipment operation).

  • Experience operating equipment at highway speeds and/or in traffic.

  • Experience driving a high profile vehicle.

  • Able to effectively communicate with co-worker and the public on a frequent basis.

Pay: $20-$25 an hour/Determined by education and relevant experience.
